What is Advent?

What is Advent?

If you trace the church's holidays (like Christmas and Easter) you'll find that we follow a calendar based on Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. The season of advent begins this calendar and loosely represents the time before Jesus' birth. Thus, advent starts four Sundays before Christmas.

The church color for Advent is purple (for royalty and repentance) or blue (to symbolize waiting and hope). We also light candles and setup twinkle lights during advent to represent signs of hope in the midst of darkness--to remember and look for Christ's coming.

Advent is a season of longing and anticipation during which we prepare for the coming of Jesus. On one hand, this means remembering the Old Testament people and prophets who waited for the birth of Jesus, but it also means remembering that this world is still in need of that savior. Christ will come again.
During Advent, we confront the world's brokenness with honest prayer and hope. We also renew our own acceptance of Jesus and make room for Christmas in our hearts and lives. This is much more than simply "counting down the days until Christmas."
Advent prepares the way for Christ!
